First it must be stated that many animal shelters and rescues are hard working, honorable, ethical organizations. Even
those that must euthanize do so with heavy hearts and try to educate communities.
However there is something that should be brought to light.
Are you aware that some animals that are dropped off at no kill shelters may still be killed? Yes, euthanized is the
pretty word. Some places that advertise "no kill" may keep animals only for a certain time and then after that send them to
the municipally run shelters where the animal may eventually be euthanized. Please just be aware that this practice may exist
and ask questions before you drop off an animal or make a donation.
Did you know that many purebred rescue groups do not keep a list of found animals for people that are looking desparately
for their lost pet? The pound is only required in many places to keep a found animal for three days. The rescue groups
can acquire animals through the pound or other means and then "place" them in a "good" home. Some placement fees are
quite high and may run in the hundreds of dollars, depending on the breed.
It is surprising to find that many of these groups are not interested in reuniting owners with their animals but to place
pets for a placement fee.
Both of these groups often attain a not-for-profit status with our IRS. We pay tax dollars. Be aware before donating
your earned and taxed dollars to the organizations that avoid tax and pass more profit to their salaries or are misleading
in their representation. Check things out and don't be afraid to ask questions and do a little research.
Again we state that many organizations are honorable and ethical. Their jobs are grueling and there monetary benefits
are not great. We must thank these people for the jobs they do.
